Cereal Varieties to Watch for 2006

Each year we try to select a range of varieties we feel are worthy of mention. This represents a small part of the portfolio of varieties we are able to offer our customers.

 

Winter Wheat

Alchemy  ( Nickerson UK )

Claire x ( Consort x Woodstock )

Newly recommended HGCA variety whose treated yield is the joint highest at 107% Control with the highest untreated yield 6% ahead of its nearest rival. A soft endosperm Group 4 variety still undergoing testing for distilling but early indications are favourable. Stiff strawed when treated with PGR. Good resistance to mildew, yellow rust and one of only three varieties highly rated at 7 for septoria triciti resistance. Alchemy has a verygood specific weight and has performed well under a range of sowing dates and soiltypes as well as showing good tolerance to orange blossom midge.

 

Gatsby   NEW   (Advanta Seeds UK)

Nelson x Wasmo

Soft endosperm Group 4 wheat added to 2006 HGCA Rec. List as a specific recommendation for growers requiring a variety with proven genetic resistance to wheat orange blossom midge. Treated yield 104% with good disease resistance and good specific weight. Stiff strawed when treated with PGR.

 

Hyperion   NEW     (Nickerson UK )

Aardvark x (Consort x Woodstock)

New addition to 2006 HGCA Rec. List with 104% treated yield Group 4 variety Hyperion has a specific recommendation for growers where there is a major risk of eyespot. Eyespot resistance (7) comes from Rendezvous gene. Stiff strawed, Hyperion has a very good specific weight and has performed well as a second wheat.

Mascot     NEW       ( RAGT Seeds )

Reaper x Rialto

Newly recommended HGCA/Nabim Group 2 milling variety with yields 2% below Solstice, also a Rialto cross, but with higher proteins. Quality similar to Solstice in giving near Group 1 quality. Mascot is stiff strawed with no major disease weakness and its untreated yield is just above that of Solstice.

Saffron     NEW       (CPB Twyford )

Antigua x Tabatha

An exceptionally high yielding 2 row equalling and bettering some conventional bred 6 rows . Highest yielding 2 row in all regions- treated and untreated- and on all soil types. A free tillering variety, Saffron has stiff straw of medium length with medium maturity. Saffron has reasonably good all-round disease resistance and produces a bright bold grain with a good specific weight and low screenings.

 

 

Spring Barley

NFC Tipple     NEW     (New Farm Crops/Syngenta)

(NFC 497-12 x Cork) x Vortex

Provisionally approved by IoB for the production of malt for brewing short, stiff strawed NFC Tipple is the highest yielding malting barley on the HGCA 2006 List: 3% above Cocktail, 10% above Optic. Good mildew/brown rust resistance but susceptible to rhynchosporium and very susceptible to yellow rust.

 

Westminster   NEW             (Nickerson UK )

NSL 97-5547 x Barke

Westminster has provisional approval by IoB for the production of malt for brewing. High yields 6% above Optic(17% above untreated) , 1% below Cocktail. Westminster Has long, stiffish straw and very good disease resistance to mildew and rhynchosporium. Maturity is similar to Optic with improved brackling resistance, specific weight and screenings loss. Straw qualities, standing and disease resistance will make Westminster popular with feed growers.

Waggon                           (New Farm Crops/Syngenta)

NFC 499-69 x Vortex

Joint highest yielding treated and highest yielding untreated spring barley available. Waggon is early ripening and has average length straw with good resistance to brackling. Disease ratings are good apart from susceptibility to rhynchosporium.
